I’ve written about this before (iykyk), but my high school choir director used to tell us, “There’s a difference between quiet and soft.” Quiet is a volume; soft is a tone. When the music called for it, he wanted us to sing more quietly. “Quiet. Never soft.” Soft is breathy, wispy, weak. Soft doesn’t have a backbone. Quiet is intentional. Quiet is expressive.

I hate to say it, but that’s how I feel about this recipe for Soft Peanut Butter Cookies. Sarah’s are better. I wanted them to have more character than they did. They started off as some of the palest peanut butter cookies I’d ever seen, and they got worse from there.

There’s nothing wrong with them. There’s nothing wrong with a lot of things in the world. I’m not arrogant enough to pretend that I have to be the final say on all opinions all the time. But I’m also not going to pretend like I’m not going to weigh in!

They are soft. They taste like peanut butter. No puppies were harmed in the making of these cookies.
